Angelo Moriondo was born on 6 June 1851 in Turin, Italy, into a family of entrepreneurs. Moriondo’s grandfather established a wine production company. Mouriondo’s father took over the company, Later, Angelo himself formed the popular chocolate company, ‘Moriondo and Gariglio’, with his brother and cousin.
Morionado bought two shops, the ‘Grand-Hotel Ligure’ in the city-centre Piazza Carlo Felice and the ‘American Bar’ at the Galleria Nazionale on Via Roma. Coffee was very popular in Italy during Moriondo’s time. However, the customers had to face inconvenience as they had to wait very long for the coffee to be ready.
For the first time in 1884, the machine was introduced to the world
“Moriondo thought that by brewing multiple cups of coffee at once, he could serve more customers at a faster rate, giving him an edge over his competitors,” Google said. Morionado presented his espresso machine in 1884 at the General Expo in Turin. Prior to the presentation, he kept the machine under the supervision of a mechanic. It was awarded the Bronze Medal at the General Expo.
The machine consisted of a large boiler that served the coffee along with the hot water. After registration in Paris on October 23, 1885, the invention was confirmed by an international patent. Moriondo got a patent. Morionado continued to improve and patent his invention in the following years.
