Satyendra Nath Bose 2022: Who was Satyendra Nath Bose?

Satyendra Nath Bose was born on 1 January 1894, he was an Indian mathematician and scientist in theoretical physics. He is remembered for the contributions he made to the field of quantum mechanics in the 1920s. He founded Bose Statistics and Bose Condensate. He was also given the Padma Vibhushan award in 1954 by the Government of India.

Some special things related to Satyendra Nath Bose

Bose was born in Calcutta. He was the eldest son in his family and had 6 sisters after him. His studies began at the age of 5 and he was admitted to the New Indian School. In the final year of his school, he attended Hindu School. He passed the board exams in 1909. He had come in fifth rank in his class.

After that he took admission in the Presidency College Calcutta. He received his education from Jagadish Chandra Bose, Sarada Prasanna Das Prafulla Chandra Ray.

Satyendra Nath Bose Research Careers

From 1916 to 1921, he was a lecturer in the Physics Department of the Rajabazar Science College, Calcutta University. Along with Saha, Bose produced the first book in English in 1919 based on German and French translations of Einstein’s original papers on special and general relativity.

In the year 1921, he joined the University of Dhaka (in present day Bangladesh) as Reader of the Physics Department. Bose set up several new departments including laboratories to teach advanced courses for M.Sc and B. Sc Honors and taught Thermodynamics as well as James Clerk Maxwell’s Theory of Electromagnetism.

While presenting a lecture on the theory of radiation and ultraviolet catastrophe at the University of Dhaka, Bose decided to show his students that the contemporary theory was not correct, as it could not predict the results according to experimental results.

In the process of describing this anomaly, Bose first took the position that the Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution would not be true for fine particles, where fluctuations would be significant due to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle.

Other Fields

Besides physics, he also did some research in biotechnology and literature (Bengali and English). He studied chemistry, geology, zoology, anthropology, engineering, and other sciences deeply.

Being Bengali, he made significant contributions in promoting Bengali as a teaching language, translating scientific papers in it, and promoting the development of the region.


He did many great things in his life. He made his contribution in promoting from the study of science to the study of Bengali. He said goodbye to this world on 4 February 1974. Even though she is not with us today, we can still take inspiration from her work. In the field of science, the principles given by him will always be useful to us.
